So I mentioned earlier how I started teaching actual lessons. So the lesson I mentioned about earlier with the ´´Would You Rather Game´´ I have done twice now as the 1 BAC class is split into 4 groups. The first group I did the lesson to was great--everyone was very engaging, people were laughing, and people really seemed to enjoy the activities I chose. They understood me well and why I chose the activities I did. Of course, feeding off this energy, I assumed it would go just as great with my next 1 BAC section, but boy was I wrong. This section is the ´lower level´ group so their English isn´t as good as the first section I had, and I remember my roommate telling me how one way you teach a class might go completely different with another class; you kind of just have to make things up to change course if it goes horribly. This, I found out, is very true. I honestly felt like a failed stand up comedian with this class as few laughed, others chatted on the side with their friends, and some yawned. I was thinking about my college days (which was not too long ago, I´m still young!), and I remember either falling asleep or dozing off, and it is honestly something you can´t control. But when you´re on the other side as the teacher it´s so hard not to even give the slightest smile when you watch someone´s head bob back and forth as they try their best to stay awake or when someone just gives the biggest yawn in the world. I think the class overall went well, but it wasn´t as engaging as the other class and not as many were interested in the game as the others. I think a lot of it had to do with the language barrier as half the students understood me while the other half was completely lost. Props to teachers---it takes a lot to prepare for a class and it´s even worse when you go in thinking you´ve planned the most awesome lecture only to arrive to a tired, non-engaging class. I have two more sections left with this topic so here is to hoping it goes as well as my first class.
