So on Friday my teacher told me I didn't have to go into work that day as my classes were going to be away on a field trip to Italy (lucky!!!) so I decided to go out with my roommate from London the night before who is also teaching English at an academy (after school private English classes versus an actual school institution). Unlike me, she has other people in her program working at her school. My program only places one auxiliary at each school so I haven't met anyone else from Vigo who is doing my program yet. Our orientation is on the 13th so I will meet plenty of them there--there is also a face book group for us that people comment on to meet up. I've been avoiding using it as I really want to meet natives from Vigo and people from all over the world. I studied abroad my third year of college with my university program and although I met natives from Valencia, I mainly stuck with the Americans in my group. I obviously had a blast being abroad, but now that I was going to be living abroad, I would like to meet people from here. So I decided to go out with my London roommate and her co-workers--two nice gentleman from London, one from Scotland, and a very nice lady from Ireland. Their accents were unbelievable, and I don't know if it was because I was drunk or not, but I told them over and over again how I could listen to them talk forever. They were so much fun and drank way more than I ever could and probably smoked 10 times in one sitting. Some things I learned-- shite(Ireland) =shet(Scotland) =shit(America)= mierda(Spanish) and that over in Ireland and Scotland, only a 50 minute distance can be the difference in how one talks. I had so much fun learning about the different cultures and everyone was very open in sharing. The guy from Scotland has been in Vigo for several years and had met some locals during his stay so he invited them out as well. I talked to one of the Spanish chicos and he mentioned how he was going to the beach the next day. I was planning on going with the auxiliaries group as well, but they were going at a later time so he invited me to go with him, and I would meet with the group later. I brought along my German roommate who was also planning on going to the beach. He had a car so we drove to la playa samil, one of the major beaches in Vigo. We decided to stay away from the crowded areas and found this little private area near it called areal do cocho das dornas, and it was beautiful. It had the bluest water and all these rocks to climb. I had so much fun and the Spaniard and I were teaching each other the slang of our native languages and correct pronunciations, which I've come to find is incredibly difficult to Spaniards because of how many different sounds the English language has. My german roommate was teaching us some words, but I had a really difficult time getting the accent down. All in all, it was a beautiful day spent with cool people!
