An earlier post I wrote about talked about a tapas excursion that was going on until the second of November. I had such a great experience I decided to go two more times! It’s like a bar crawl but even better because it’s food. The second time around we first went to La Contenta and tried Crocante de bacallau con marmelada de pemento de Arnoia. The dish was very papery and crunchy if that made sense and lacked a lot of flavor. The service was also horrible so I will probably not visit that place again. I sound like a food critic, which I am far from, but I think everyone would have agreed with me there. The next restaurant we went to was Lume de Carozo which featured tacos mexicanos de pato á laranxa con piña asada. It was your regular taco, and I’ve had some great ones in the U.S so I wasn’t too impressed. I loved the next tapa we tried. It was a soup called marmitako nipón at Zasca! Restaurant, and it was delicious! The fourth restaurant we went to was called La ventana indiscreta. Their tapa, el mejillón was a bit interesting as it was all grinded seafood with no texture, but it was still pretty good. Night one of the tapa excursions was better foodwise than night two, but was still sooo much fun as I went with really awesome people. I went with two friends and then these two Brazilians I had met the other day. Traveling here by myself, I’ve found that when I meet someone for the first time whether it be at a supermarket or bar, if I vibe really well with them right off the bat, I’ll exchange numbers and invite them out. It’s worked really well so far, and I’ve met so many awesome people already by doing that.
On night three, we tried five different restaurants. I know, you must be thinking, how am I spending so much on such a little salary. The nice thing about the tapas excursion is that each one is only 1.50euro so after hopping between about 5-6 restaurants, you have paid the equivalent of a dinner entrée. The first restaurant we went to was called Enoteque Buque. The presentation of the tapa was very elegant, and the tapa itself was just as good--the perfect combination of sweet and savory! The second restaurant we went to was Fai Bistes –we tried the segredo del mango. It was another winner and a perfect blend of sweet and savory. The environment was also pretty cool and very colorful. The third place we went to was conveniently right across the street called La consentida, and I got the posh feel while there. This was my favorite tapa from all the nights I tried. It was an egg stuffed with lobster dip, topped with lobster meat. The next place we tried was Taperia Stefany—it was a very average meal called Isto non é bacalau con pisto. The idea of the tapa excursion is great because you get a taste of the food and environment of each place since Casca Viejo is booming with restaurants---just 10 steps, and you’ve already passed by 3 restaurants. The last place we went to was Cre-cotte, and their featured tapa was sushi! Although it is not a Spanish dish by any means, sushi will always be sushi and delicious no matter where. They also added a crepe on the side since that is what the restaurant is known for, but it wasn’t very sweet. Overall, the tapas excursion was a success, and now I know what restaurants are great for dinner and ones that are maybe not so great.
